VetProjects International (VPI) has been proudly working alongside and up-skilling newly graduated and undergraduate veterinary students since 2015. We run our Training Projects in small groups of 4 trainees at a time so that we can provide individualised instruction and support. Our onus is on quality technique with a focus on surgical and anaesthetic training. We teach through practical, hands-on, positive-feedback based training.

Our teaching vets are experienced, highly skilled, patient and supportive. We aim for all trainees to come away from the Project feeling confident and with the skills necessary to go into their respective clinics and put their newly gained spey/neuter, anaesthetic and general practical skills into practice.

The Projects are based at the Animals Fiji veterinary hospital in Nadi, Fiji. We have the honour of working alongside their founder, Casey Quimby and her wonderful team lead by Dr Ashitosh Kumar. They generously provide us access to their hospital and run alongside an existing spey/neuter program for both shelter animals and privately owned pets.

Our VetSkills Training Projects are aimed at final year veterinary students or recently graduated veterinarians. The Projects are taught over 2 or 3 weeks of hands-on, practical training that is focused towards surgery, anaesthesia and general practical skills under direct guidance and supervision of experienced veterinarians.
Benefits of the Training Projects include:

  • Launch your practical skills with 2 or 3 weeks of dedicated, small group practical skills training. We start with a lecture on spay/neuter techniques, then progress through group training and individual feedback and guidance
  • Gain confidence! There is no greater feeling for a new grad or student vet than to feel like a contributing member of the clinic. Having well rounded practical and spey/neuter skills goes a long way to achieving just that.
  • Trainees thrive in our supportive environment where we teach and progress each individual at their own pace and with help always on hand.

We offer 2 and 3 week Projects that we can tailor to a run at a time that suits both your group and our team. A typical week involves:

  • Arrival – we pick all trainees up from the airport and bring them to meet the team and settle in to our group accommodation
  • Clinic Day 1 – Includes initial lectures and direct observation of surgical techniques. Trainees scrub in to assist with surgery initially.
  • Clinic Day 2 – Trainees continue to scrub in and learn the technique side-by-side with our vets and begin to perform the surgery themselves under close supervision. We begin to work in pairs so that the non surgery team member is then guided through and responsible for monitoring the anaesthetic. Team members rotate roles throughout the day.
  • Clinic Days 3-5+ – Trainees progress on an individual basis as they feel comfortable and as we assess they are ready to learn minor variations in technique and use of different suture patterns.
  • Departure – We help organise airport transfers and arrange departure for trainees back to Australia.
**For undergraduate veterinarians we require you to join us for a minimum of 2 weeks of training as we have found that you need this time to hone your skills. For graduates vets, the minimum training length is one week.
**It is important to note that actual numbers of spey/neuter cases seen during the Project can vary due to some factors out of our control (e.g. number of animals in the shelter, visits from local clients. However, we always do our best to ensure the most amount of experience can be gained as possible.
**All surgery days start at 8am and will continue through to 5pm. This is designed to maximise the learning opportunity!

The price for attending the 7 day surgical course is $1650AUD per trainee per week and includes the following:

  • Airport transfer on arrival to help ease the arrival process

  • Accommodation in twin-share facilities
  • Food! This includes breakfast and lunch on all surgery days.
  • All lectures, group and individual training sessions
  • All necessary surgical and anaesthetic equipment
  • An uplifting, challenging and rewarding experience for all involved!
Please note that prices do not include flights to and from Fiji, travel insurance, or any additional activities trainees may choose to undertake in their free time.
**For undergraduate veterinarians we require you to join us for a minimum of 2 weeks of training as we have found that you need this time to hone your skills.
